"Nothing becomes an empire like its fall. If Rome and the British Empire are any example, find out why America may be going down the same road..."  A mechanic friend once used the expression "in the weeds" to describe a hopeless, unfixable situation. I thought it was an awesome metaphor! So when I had to come up with a fresh symbol for America as fallen empire, his phrase came to mind. (Well, it came to mind after I got that final scene from 'Planet of the Apes' out of my mind.) This must have been an easy one; I came up with so many ideas!  This illustration won the Gold Medal at the Colorado Alliance of Illustrators show last year
