David Brooks is known for his book "Bobos in Paradise: The New Upper Class and How They Got There", which examines our culture from a consumerist angle (you drink Starbucks and see independent movies, therefore you are in an 'upper' social class). This essay compares this method unfavorably with previous (less materialist) methods of dissecting American society. The author suggests there is something more fundamental to be said about us as people, besides what we surround ourselves with. So here's some basic people, (cavemen! What could be more basic!), pondering their basic, unspeakable human problems, even as they live in a cave of cool stuff
